Pelican vs. Yeti – Which is better
This question is a controversial debate amongst outdoor enthusiasts. Pelican Vs. Yeti – Which is better.
The Bottom Line:
These coolers are both robustly designed and can withstand tough conditions, but Pelican offers a lifetime warranty and the push and pull latches are of a better design than that of the Yeti.
Despite both being relatively expensive coolers, the Pelican is a better value for money with the lifetime warranty, and now with a new design which is also lighter.
Pelican Cooler Review – Conclusion
Pelican coolers have gone one step further with the same durable design of the new coolers which are lighter and have added features such as the cup holders molded in the lid, the integrated measuring board and stainless steel bottle opener.
The molded in handles and 3″ locking latches are all features that have been improved but with same ice retention power and robust design that is required for any cooler.
I’m looking into buying a new cooler and am torn between a Yeti and a Pelican. I know this has been discussed before and I’ve read through a lot of threads. While everyone talks positively about Pelican, it seems like Yeti still has more “buzz” around it. Why is that? I really don’t want to buy a Yeti simply because it’s a Yeti.. Any Pelican owners can speak to their quality?
I have a Pelican 65, and I love it! The quality is outstanding and I’m sure with proper care I will have it for a very, very long time. Being vegetarian I always take lots of fresh produce camping as well as beer and other misc stuff. Thus size is plenty for all my food and bevs for several days. It keeps ice as advertised and better, if you are not in and out of it all the time. The handles and latched are super bomb proof and easy to use. There is a vent hole under one of the latches to help when the thing vapor locks because it’s so cold, as far as I know yeti doesn’t have a feature like that. I think you have to open the drain a little to vent it or something like that. Another feature of the Pelican I like is that you can drop in stainless steamer trays like you see food served in at buffets right in the top to organize your stuff you don’t want touching the ice. This is where I keep produce or other things I want cold but not wet. I think yeti has a basket for this. The steamer trays come in lots of sizes and shape that the yeti basket doesn’t though.
The hardware on the Pelican seems of high quality. All the latches and handles are attached with stainless fastners and look like they’d be easy to replace if they got broke. The lod is sealed with a freezer gasket like the Yeti and seals very well. Sometimes a little to well, thus is when that little vent hole under the latch comes in handy.
The down side of the pelican is that it has molded in handle that stick out a little on the side. There is a lot of hype for Yeti, and they are good coolers. I just opted to save about 30% and get a Pelican. Either way you’ll end up with a cooler that will more than suit your needs.
